Sixers acquire Jason Kapono for Reggie Evans

June 9th, 2009 | by Kevin Hanson |

As a Sixers fan, I truly appreciate the toughness and energy that Reggie Evans brought night in and night out.  Granted Evans lacked polish and skill, but his tireless effort provided a spark off the bench.

Now Evans will be taking his lunch-pail mentality north of the border.

Today, the Sixers sent Evans to Toronto in exchange for sharp-shooter Jason Kapono.

Both Kapono and Evans have two years remaining on their contracts and the trade won’t be final until both players pass their physical.  Over the next two seasons, Kapono will earn a combined $3.2 million more than Evans.

Kapono, who won the NBA 3-point Shootout Championship in 2007 and 2008, helps to strengthen the Sixers’ biggest weakness.

Last year, the Sixers made only 4.2 three-pointers per game (29th in the NBA) and converted on 31.8 percent of their attempts (30th in the NBA).

In addition to Kapono filling a need, the Sixers are moving a guy that would have been stuck in a logjam at power forward.  Marresse Speights played well as a rookie, Thaddeus Young got some time at the four and Elton Brand and Jason Smith will be returning from injuries.

Kapono has shot 45.4 percent from three-point range for his career and actually shot over 50% in the 2006-07 season.
