Is Donyell done?

June 18th, 2009 | by Kevin Hanson |

His best days (as a basketball player) are obviously well behind him.  And he is about to become a free agent on July 1st (when the NBA free agency period begins).

That being said, Marshall would “definitely like” to play again.

I’ve kind of been preparing for this moment, whenever it comes, whenever I do retire as a player,” Marshall told Phil Jasner of the Philadelphia Daily News. “I’ve never said I wouldn’t keep playing. In fact, I’d definitely like to do that, but we’ll have to see what happens with teams’ plans.

“I’ve played 14 years, and normally there might be teams that would keep a player like me to help work with the younger guys. But the economy hurts everybody; teams are making cuts they might not normally make. Maybe they only keep 13 or 14 players instead of 15, and that impacts somebody like me.”

In the 2008-09 season, Marshall logged only 7 1/2 minutes per game in the 25 games he played, but he made better than 45 percent of his threes.

That is more than ten percentage points better than the next best guy(s): Royal Ivey, who declined his option, and Thaddeus Young.  Both Young and Ivey made 34.2 percent of their threes.

As a team, the Sixers ranked dead last in three-point shooting percentage last season.  Granted, they traded for three-point specialist Jason Kapono and will likely draft a point guard next week that can knock down some threes.

But shouldn’t they bring back a role player that helps to fill their biggest void?
