Miller to Knicks in sign-and-trade for Duhon?

July 11th, 2009 | by Kevin Hanson |

What do I and Andre Miller share in common?

For starters, neither of us are likely to be the 76ers starting point guard when the 2009-2010 season begins.

Sixers GM Ed Stefanski and Andy Miller (Andre’s agent) haven’t been close in their negotiations.  Miller is seeking a contract in the three-year and $30 million range.  Stefanski offered a one-year deal reportedly worth $6 million.

It’s not likely that the two sides will bridge their enormous gap as Stefanski told Kate Fagan of the Philadelphia Inquirer that “to go long term on a contract with an older point guard, we don’t see that as being a viable option.”

“I’m disappointed by where we are at this point,” said Miller’s agent. “I think you can categorize my feelings as disappointment. I think there were better intentions during the year than there seem to be right now. I don’t think there are ulterior motives, it’s just with all things hitting right now. . . we’re genuinely far apart and that’s why I categorize it as disappointing.”

One of the teams interested in Miller is the New York Knicks.

According to Tom Moore of PhillyBurbs.com, Chris Duhon’s agent (Kevin Bradbury) is exploring the potential for a sign-and-trade deal involving Miller and Duhon.

Duhon is in the final year of his contract and is due $6 million, which is what the Sixers offered Miller.

Moore points out that the Knicks could only offer Miller the mid-level exception of $5.85 without a sign-and-trade.  With a sign-and-trade, the Knicks could offer Miller $7.6 million, which is 125 percent of Duhon’s salary plus $100,000.

In a sign-and-trade, Miller would get a three-year deal, but only the first year would be guaranteed.

According to Moore, the Sixers are asking for more than Duhon (i.e., a draft pick too).

Last year, Duhon averaged 11.1 points, 7.2 assists and 1.6 threes per game.
