Should the Sixers re-sign Iverson?

December 1st, 2009 | by Kevin Hanson |

I admit it.  I’m torn.

After Allen Iverson met with the Sixers yesterday in Dallas for two hours, general manager Ed Stefanski said that the team “will continue to discuss internally whether or not to pursue this course.”

But ESPN’s Marc Stein says that Iverson could be on the floor in a Sixers’ uniform as early as Monday night’s game against the Nuggets, to whom Iverson was traded for Andre Miller.  And even though no decision is official, a source of Stein’s says, “No doubt he’s coming back.”

Iverson was (is) one of my favorite players.  Ever.  And many share my sentiments.

With the Sixers struggling (seven-game losing streak) and the absence of Lou Williams for eight weeks, signing Iverson would instantly boost the number of fans attending Sixers’ games and provide the team with instant offense.

And it would be more fitting for Iverson to eventually “retire” as a Sixer as opposed to how the situation in Memphis unfolded.

Those are some of the positives of an Iverson return.  But…

If/when the Sixers and Iverson agree to “pursue this course,” it seems as though there are more questions than answers (no pun intended).

How will Iverson’s shoot-first, me-first attitude affect the younger players on this roster?  How will he be integrated into the Princeton offense?  What happens when the team is back at full strength, especially since Iverson firmly believes that he’s “a starter” in this league?

Without Iverson, the Sixers will (still) be awful.  With Iverson, they will be (a little less) awful.

The silver lining of the Lou Williams’ injury was the opportunity for increased minutes for — and hopefully accelerated development of — rookie Jrue Holiday, the team’s first-round pick this year.  That’s not likely to happen with Iverson back in the mix.

What are your thoughts?  Do the pro’s outweigh the con’s in bringing Iverson back?
